The classic ratio is 2:1:1. Some bartenders prefer 3:2:1 for a rounder, less sharp drink — worth trying both.
Tommy's Margarita swaps the Cointreau for 15 ml agave syrup, which lets the tequila come through much more clearly.

A cooked sugar syrup rather than sugar stirred into cold water, so nothing grits at the bottom of the jug. The zest goes in too — that's where the lemon flavour actually lives.
